The moments immediately following a collision are chaotic and stressful. However, the actions you take at the scene are critical to ensuring a smooth and successful non-fault claim. Keep this checklist handy in your cab.
1. Safety First
- Stop your vehicle safely and turn off the engine.
- Turn on your hazard lights.
- Check yourself, your passengers, and the other driver for injuries.
- Call 999 if anyone is injured, if the road is blocked, or if the other driver leaves the scene without providing details.
2. Gather Information (The Golden Rule)
Never admit liability at the scene, even a casual "I'm sorry" can be used against you. Instead, focus entirely on gathering information:
- Other Driver's Details: Name, address, phone number, and email.
- Vehicle Details: Make, model, color, and most importantly, the registration number.
- Insurance Details: Ask for their insurance company name and policy number.
- Witnesses: Get names and contact information of any independent witnesses. (Passengers count, but independent witnesses are stronger).
3. Document the Scene
Your smartphone is your best tool here.
- Photos: Take wide shots of the entire scene showing the position of the vehicles. Take close-ups of the damage to both vehicles. Photograph any skid marks or road conditions.
- Dashcam: If you have a dashcam, ensure the footage is saved and secured immediately.
4. Call Taxi Claims Scotland
Do not call your own insurance company just yet. If you are not at fault, calling Taxi Claims Scotland on 0333 577 7736 should be your next move.
We will guide you through the next steps, arrange immediate recovery if your vehicle is immobilized, and dispatch a replacement plated taxi so you don't miss a day of earnings. We will then notify the relevant insurers on your behalf.
